Golo is a new Grindr alternative for India, built for men who want to meet someone without a photo of their face going anywhere. Grindr calls itself the world’s largest network for gay, bi, trans and queer adults.
Grindr has the people; Golo keeps your face out of it
Golo is a chat and dating app for gay and bisexual men in India with no profile photos at all. Other people see only a rough distance, a chat photo opens once, and every message is deleted after 30 days.
Grindr is far bigger, with 50M+ downloads on Google Play, and it runs on Android and iPhone. It has good privacy tools of its own, and on Android it also comes in Hindi, Bengali and Telugu.
The real difference is what each app is built around. Grindr’s home screen is a grid of profiles. A photo is optional, but Grindr calls it the first impression you make. Golo has no photo field to fill in.
If you want the most men nearby tonight, or you use an iPhone, Grindr is the stronger choice. If a photo of your face on a dating app is a line you will not cross, Golo is built for you.
How Golo keeps your face and location out of it
Each of these works from the moment you sign up, except App Lock, which you turn on in Settings.
No photo of you, anywhere
Golo has no profile picture field. Your profile shows the first letter of your name, so there is nothing of your face to screenshot from a grid and repost.
A rough distance, never a pin
Others see a distance such as ~1.2 km, or >100 km when you are far apart. Your exact location is used to work that out and is never shown to other people.
Chat photos get one look
A photo you send opens one time, with no timer. The moment it is opened, nobody can open it again, our servers delete it, and you can see when it was opened.
Screenshots come out black
Golo blocks screenshots and screen recording across the whole app, not only on photos. It cannot stop someone photographing the screen with a second phone, so send only what you are fine with him keeping.
Only a phone number
You sign up with an Indian mobile number and a one-time code. No email, and no Google, Apple or Facebook account.
A PIN or fingerprint, if you want one
Turn on App Lock in Settings, and Golo asks for a 4-digit PIN or your fingerprint before it opens.

No feed, no posts and no travel mode. Golo shows the men near you, the most recently active first, and leaves the rest to you.

What Grindr is
Grindr is made by Grindr LLC, a US company in West Hollywood, California, and has run since 2009.
Its home screen is the Grid: the people closest to you, plus people using Boost. Every profile field is optional, a photo included.
It is free with ads. Two paid tiers, XTRA and Unlimited, remove the ads and add extra features; Unlimited adds Incognito browsing. Common questions
Is Golo a Grindr clone?
No. Golo is an independent app from a different company, and it is not connected to Grindr in any way.
Can I hide my distance on Golo?
No. Golo always shows a rough distance, such as ~1.2 km, and never your exact location. If hiding the number matters to you, Grindr has a switch for it.
Can I look at men in another city, like Explore?
Not by city. You can pick any state in Filters and message the men there, but there is no way to set your location somewhere else.
How do I delete my Golo account?
In the app, go to Settings, then Manage account, then Delete account. Your profile disappears for everyone else straight away.
Is Golo available on iPhone?
Not yet. Golo is an Android app today. Grindr is on Android and iPhone.
