Blocking on Grindr: Block vs Hide, and What Each One Stops
By Golo Team

Blocking on Grindr works both ways: the man you block no longer sees you on the app, and you no longer see him. Your chats with him are removed from your inbox, and he is not told. But the Grindr block button only appears on profiles that have messaged you. For everyone else you get Hide, which also makes you vanish from each other's grid without a notice.
Neither tool works on the man himself, only on one profile. And no block can call back a photo or a number once he has it. Here is what each tool does, what it doesn't, and when to report as well.

| Block | Hide | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you see it | On profiles that have messaged you | On profiles you haven't exchanged messages with |
| What he sees after | You are gone: he no longer sees you on the app | Your profile disappears from his grid and the rest of his app |
| What you see after | He is removed from your view | His profile leaves your grid, Viewed Me, Taps and the rest of the app |
| Your chats | Removed from your inbox | No chat to remove, because Hide only appears where you haven't chatted |
| Can you message each other? | No, unless you unblock | Grindr's pages don't say |
| Is he told? | No | No |
| What Grindr says it is for | "Safety, harassment, or serious issues" | "To avoid someone you know or to curate your grid" |
| Cost on Grindr Free and XTRA | Not mentioned on Grindr's block page | Each hide takes one profile off your grid |
| How to undo it | Settings → Security & Privacy → Unblock Users | Settings → Security & Privacy → Unhide Users |

What happens when you block someone
If you block someone on Grindr, can he still see you? No. Grindr's help page says that once you block a profile, that person "will no longer see you on the app", and all your chats with him leave your inbox. He also disappears from your view, and neither of you can contact the other unless you unblock him.
To block a profile that has messaged you:
- Open his profile.
- Tap the block icon (🚫) in the top-left corner.
- Choose Block from the menu.
- Choose Yes to confirm.
Why you see Hide instead of Block
Grindr shows Block on profiles that have messaged you; for everyone else it offers Hide. The help page explains why: blocks are "a feature designed for your safety, not simply organizing your Grid". If you only want a profile off your screen, Hide is the tool.
A Reddit thread near the top of Google's results says Grindr is replacing Block with Hide. Grindr's own blog says the opposite: "Profile Hide isn't replacing Block."
To hide a profile:
- Open a profile you haven't chatted with.
- Find the hide icon at the top of his profile photo.
- Tap Hide. The profile leaves your grid straight away.
Hide has one catch. Grindr's "Hiding profiles" help page says that on Grindr Free and XTRA, the number of profiles you can see goes down by one for every profile you hide. Unlimited users get a fresh profile in its place. So on Free or XTRA, keep Hide for the profiles you really need gone. Also, if you've agreed to help Grindr improve its AI features, it uses your hides to shape your grid.
What a block does not stop
- A new profile from the same man. Grindr notes that users "often create multiple profiles". If someone you blocked messages you again from a new profile, block that one too, and check that the old profile is still on your block list.
- Anything you already sent. A block removes the chat from your inbox and stops contact inside the app. But Grindr's safety tips warn that anything you send, "including photos or videos", can be shared beyond your control. Grindr Unlimited does let you unsend a chat message, which removes it "from all chat members", but only within 24 hours of sending it.
- Contact outside Grindr. If you gave him your phone number, or moved the chat to WhatsApp or Instagram, a Grindr block does not reach there. You would need to block him on those apps too.
When to report as well as block
Grindr's rule of thumb is simple: if someone makes you uncomfortable, block him; if he breaks Grindr's Community Guidelines, report him. The two are separate steps. In Grindr's words, "Reporting a profile does not also block it." Every report goes to Grindr's moderation team, which works round the clock. Where you do both, report first: a block removes your chats with him from your inbox, and step 4 of the report may offer to include them.

| Situation | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Someone you know (a cousin, a colleague) is on your grid, and you haven't chatted | Hide | Grindr says Hide is for avoiding "someone you know", and he isn't told |
| A chat makes you uneasy, but he hasn't broken any rule | Block | Grindr encourages you to block someone who is "making you feel uncomfortable" |
| Harassment, bullying or threats | Report, then block | "Harassment or Bullying" is a report category |
| Spam, hate speech, nudity or impersonation | Report, then block | Each is a Grindr report category |
| A profile that may belong to someone under 18 | Report, then block | Grindr asks users to report every such profile |
| A man you blocked comes back with a new profile | Block the new profile; report it if he is harassing you | Grindr says to block the new profile and check the old one is still blocked; harassment is a report category |
| Something happened outside the app | Email help@grindr.com | Grindr asks for off-app incidents by email |
To report a profile:
- Open his profile and tap the icon in the top-left corner.
- Choose Report, then the category that fits best: illegal activity, spam, harassment or bullying, hate speech or discrimination, nudity, a profile that may belong to someone under 18, or impersonation.
- Tap Next, say what happened, and mark where it happened: profile photo, profile information or chat message.
- Depending on what you choose, Grindr may ask whether to include your last 30 chats with him.
- Review the report and tap Submit.
If you aren't using the app, you can also report by email through Grindr's help centre.
Will he know you reported him? Grindr says it protects "the privacy and safety of users who may have reported a profile": even when it explains a ban, it won't share details of reports "that may reveal who reported a profile". After a report, Grindr may give a warning, remove content, suspend the profile for a time, or ban it. It may also act to stop the same person making new profiles. A block alone can't do that.
You can't find out who blocked you
Can you see who blocked you on Grindr? No. When a profile vanishes from your grid or inbox, there are several possible reasons, and Grindr will not tell you which one applies.
- He blocked you. You no longer see him on the app or in your inbox.
- He hid you. You vanish from each other's grids. This is only possible if you never exchanged messages.
- He was banned. Grindr removes a banned profile from the app entirely, including the messages it sent.
- He deleted his account. That removes all his data and the messages he sent.
- He went Incognito. On Grindr Unlimited, Incognito "hides your profile from the Grindr grid" while he keeps using the app.
Grindr's "Disappearing profiles & messages" page names the first, third and fourth, and leaves out Hide and Incognito. About the ones it names, Grindr says: "For privacy reasons, we're unable to confirm or deny if any of these scenarios may apply to you." A missing profile may have nothing to do with you.
How to unblock or unhide someone
You can undo either one at any time.
To unblock:
- Tap your profile, then Settings.
- Scroll down to Security & Privacy.
- Tap Unblock Users and pick the person.
- Tap OK to confirm.
Grindr's pages don't say whether your old chats come back after an unblock.
To unhide:
- Go to Settings.
- Scroll down to Security & Privacy.
- Tap Unhide Users and choose who to unhide.
He isn't told when you unhide him, but your profile reappears in his grid.
Blocking on Golo
Golo is our app, so weigh this part with that in mind. Grindr's tools work well once you know which one to use.
On Golo you can block and report any user from his profile or from your chat. Reports are confidential, and reports of suspected minors are recorded for review. Golo is built to reduce what can leak: every message deletes itself after 30 days, and the app blocks screen capture and screen recording. Our community guidelines list what to report, such as outing someone without his consent.
To see where each app is stronger, read how Golo and Grindr compare, or browse all our app comparisons. If you'd like to try Golo, it is free: get Golo on Google Play.
